5 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary
The 5 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Climbing is a remote and scenic route approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side near the Kenya border. It is known for its quiet trails, beautiful wilderness scenery, and gradual ascent through different ecological zones. The route offers a unique experience before joining the summit trail to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,625m)
Distance: 8 km

Overnight: Simba Camp
After breakfast in Moshi, you will drive to Rongai Gate for registration and park formalities. The climb begins through farmland and beautiful rainforest trails. The peaceful route offers opportunities to see wildlife and enjoy the untouched northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. You will arrive at Simba Camp for dinner and overnight rest.
Day 2: Simba Camp (2,625m) – Kikelewa Camp (3,630m)
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Kikelewa Camp
After breakfast, you continue climbing through the moorland zone with spectacular views of Kibo Peak. The trail crosses open landscapes and volcanic terrain before reaching Kikelewa Camp, a scenic campsite surrounded by impressive mountain views.
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp (3,630m) – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Today’s hike is shorter but steeper as you ascend toward the beautiful Mawenzi Tarn Camp. Located beneath the dramatic Mawenzi Peak, this is one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro. The afternoon is spent resting and acclimatizing while enjoying the stunning surroundings.
Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m) – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Kibo Hut
After breakfast, you cross the famous Saddle, the desert area between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The trail gradually leads toward Kibo Hut, the final camp before the summit attempt. You will have an early dinner and rest while preparing for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak.
Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,700m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Moshi
Distance: 22 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone / Moorland
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Around midnight, you begin your final ascent toward the summit. The challenging climb takes you through volcanic rocks to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement and taking summit photos, you descend to Horombo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Marangu Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi marks the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
