5 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary
The 5 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climbing is one of the most popular and direct routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it offers a comfortable trekking experience with overnight stays in mountain huts. The route passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glaciers before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Overnight: Mandara Hut
After breakfast in Moshi, you will be transferred to Marangu Gate for registration and park procedures. The hike begins through the lush rainforest zone, where you may see monkeys, birds, and beautiful tropical vegetation. After a gradual climb, you arrive at Mandara Hut, where you enjoy dinner and rest.
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut
After breakfast, you continue through the rainforest before entering the moorland zone. The landscape opens up with spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The trail passes through the scenic Maundi Crater area before reaching Horombo Hut, where you spend the night and begin adjusting to the higher altitude.
Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Today’s trek takes you across the alpine desert between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak. The trail gradually becomes more challenging as you approach Kibo Hut, the final base camp before the summit. After an early dinner, you will rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Day 4: Kibo Hut (4,700m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Distance: 22 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone / Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut
You wake around midnight and begin the challenging climb toward the summit. The trail leads through steep volcanic rocks to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. Continue along the glacier-covered path to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement and taking summit photos, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay.
Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Moshi
Distance: 20 km

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
After breakfast, you descend through the beautiful moorland and rainforest zones to Marangu Gate. After completing the park exit procedures, you will receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi for relaxation and celebration.
