7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary
The 7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing is one of the most popular and scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers beautiful landscapes, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and a higher summit success rate compared to shorter routes. The trek passes through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glaciers before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)

Overnight: Machame Camp
After breakfast in Moshi, you will drive to Machame Gate where registration and park formalities are completed. The climb begins through the beautiful rainforest zone, where you may spot monkeys, colorful birds, and unique vegetation. The trail gradually ascends through dense forest before reaching Machame Camp, where you will enjoy dinner and rest.
Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000m) – Shira Camp (3,840m)

Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Shira Camp
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and climb through the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you cross rocky ridges with impressive views of Mount Meru and the surrounding landscapes. You will arrive at the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful areas, where you camp under the stars with breathtaking mountain views.
Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840m) – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Overnight: Barranco Camp
Today is an important acclimatization day. You trek gradually upward to Lava Tower (4,630m), allowing your body to adjust to higher altitude. After lunch near Lava Tower, you descend to the spectacular Barranco Valley. The descent helps improve acclimatization while enjoying views of glaciers and the famous Barranco Wall.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) – Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Overnight: Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you begin the climb of the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling section requiring some scrambling but no technical climbing experience. From the top, you enjoy incredible views of Kibo Peak and the southern glaciers. The trail continues across valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp, where you rest before the final approach to the summit.
Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) – Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Overnight: Barafu Camp
Today’s hike is short but important as you prepare for summit day. You walk through the alpine desert landscape toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before reaching Uhuru Peak. After an early dinner, you will rest and prepare your equipment for the midnight summit attempt.
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,640m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,080m)
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone / Rainforest
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Mweka Camp
You wake around midnight and begin the challenging summit climb. The trail leads slowly upward through volcanic rocks toward Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim. From there, you continue along the glacier-covered ridge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photos at the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp through the rainforest zone.
Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,080m) – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Moshi
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After completing park registration and receiving your summit certificate, you will be transferred back to Moshi for a well-deserved shower, celebration, and overnight stay.
