6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary

The 6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climbing is an extended version of the classic Marangu Route, designed with an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut to improve your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) successfully. This route provides comfortable hut accommodation and passes through Kilimanjaro’s beautiful ecological zones, from rainforest to the Arctic summit zone.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Mandara Hut

After breakfast in Moshi, you will drive to Marangu Gate for registration and park formalities. The trek begins through the lush rainforest, where you can enjoy beautiful vegetation and possible sightings of monkeys and birds. After a steady hike, you arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight rest.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut

Today you continue through changing landscapes from rainforest to open moorland. The trail offers magnificent views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. After passing the scenic Maundi Crater viewpoint, you reach Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut

This extra day helps your body adjust to the altitude and increases summit success chances. You will take an acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks while enjoying panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks. Later, return to Horombo Hut for rest and preparation for the next stage.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Kibo Hut

After breakfast, you cross the alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The landscape becomes more barren as you approach Kibo Hut, the final camp before the summit. You will have an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,700m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 22 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone / Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut

Around midnight, you begin the challenging climb toward the summit. The trail leads slowly upward through volcanic terrain to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, you descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Moshi

Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones to Marangu Gate. After completing park procedures, you receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi for relaxation and celebration.
