Debre Libanos Monastery

Your tour begins with pickup from your hotel or Addis Ababa airport, followed by a scenic drive approximately 105 km northwest of the capital to Debre Libanos.

Founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, Debre Libanos is one of Ethiopia’s most important Orthodox Christian monasteries and has played a significant role in the country’s religious history.

Visit the monastery and church associated with Saint Tekle Haymanot, explore the religious grounds, and learn about the traditions and history of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. You can also visit the nearby cave and holy spring, which is an important pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians.

Portuguese Bridge & Waterfall

Continue with a short walk to the historic Portuguese Bridge, traditionally associated with Portuguese influence in Ethiopia during the 16th century. The bridge crosses the Gur River, which flows toward a dramatic waterfall plunging into the surrounding gorge.

Enjoy breathtaking views of the rugged landscape and deep valleys of the Blue Nile Gorge.

Gelada Baboons

The surrounding highlands are also home to the Gelada baboon, an endemic Ethiopian primate famous for its distinctive reddish chest patch. With some luck, you will have the opportunity to observe these fascinating animals in their natural habitat.

Lunch & Return to Addis Ababa

After exploring Debre Libanos and the surrounding gorge, stop for lunch at a local restaurant, such as the Ethio-German Hotel.

After lunch, begin the scenic drive back to Addis Ababa, arriving in the late afternoon or evening.
