Tour Itinerary
Addis Ababa Full-Day City Tour

Duration: 7–9 Hours
Mode of Transportation: Private Car

Discover the history, culture, and vibrant character of Ethiopia’s capital on a full-day tour of Addis Ababa. Founded by Emperor Menelik II in 1887, Addis Ababa—meaning “New Flower”—is a fascinating city where Ethiopia’s ancient traditions, imperial history, and modern life come together.

During this city tour, you will visit important historical landmarks, museums, churches, viewpoints, and one of Africa’s largest traditional markets.

Mount Entoto

Begin your tour with a drive up Mount Entoto, one of the highest points overlooking Addis Ababa, reaching approximately 3,200 meters above sea level. Entoto has great historical and religious importance and was associated with Emperor Menelik II before the development of modern Addis Ababa.

Enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the city and visit historic churches and monasteries, including Saint Mary (Entoto Mariam) and Saint Raguel. The mountain also offers an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cooler climate surrounding the capital.

National Museum of Ethiopia

Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to some of the country's most important archaeological, historical, and artistic treasures.

The museum is internationally famous for its hominid fossils, including “Lucy,” the approximately 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis skeleton. The museum also displays Selam, another important Australopithecus afarensis fossil estimated to be about 3.3 million years old, along with collections representing Ethiopia’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Ethnological Museum

Continue to the Ethnological Museum, located within the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie on the grounds of Addis Ababa University.

The museum provides an excellent introduction to Ethiopia’s diverse peoples, cultures, traditions, religious practices, and ways of life. Its exhibitions offer visitors a deeper understanding of the country's remarkable cultural diversity.

Holy Trinity Cathedral

Visit Holy Trinity Cathedral (Kidist Selassie), one of the most important Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo churches in Addis Ababa.

The cathedral has strong historical connections to Ethiopia’s imperial period and the country's resistance to the Italian occupation. Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen Asfaw are buried inside the cathedral, along with other members of the Imperial family.

Merkato

End your city tour with a visit to Merkato, Addis Ababa’s famous open-air marketplace and one of the largest traditional markets in Africa.

Explore the lively market streets and discover a wide variety of Ethiopian products, including spices, coffee, traditional clothing, handicrafts, household goods, and locally produced items. Merkato provides an authentic glimpse into the everyday commercial life of Addis Ababa.
This full-day city tour offers a perfect introduction to Addis Ababa, combining history, culture, religion, museums, local life, and spectacular city views in one memorable experience.
